Abhishek Reekhaye
Consultant Urological & Robotic Surgeon
Consultant Urologist and Robotic Surgeon · Frimley Health NHS Foundation Trust
Mr Abhishek Reekhaye is a Consultant Urological and Robotic Surgeon at Urology Partners. He specialises in robotic and minimally invasive surgery for kidney and upper urinary tract cancer, and in robotic reconstruction of the upper urinary tract. He performed over 120 robotic renal cancer procedures in his first year as a consultant, and he treats patients across London and Surrey.
Robotic kidney cancer surgery
Mr Reekhaye’s practice centres on robotic kidney and upper tract cancer surgery, including:
- Partial nephrectomy (removing a kidney tumour while preserving the kidney)
- Radical nephrectomy (removing the kidney)
- Robotic nephroureterectomy for upper tract urothelial cancer (removing the kidney and ureter)
As a consultant at Frimley Park Hospital, he also works at The Frimley Renal Cancer Centre, one of the highest-volume kidney cancer centres in the UK which is recognised for excellent outcomes and for some of the shortest lengths of stay in the country for robotic kidney surgery.
Retroperitoneal robotic surgery
Mr Reekhaye has particular expertise in the retroperitoneal approach to kidney surgery. This approach reaches the kidney from the back, avoiding the abdominal cavity. It is especially helpful for patients who have had previous abdominal surgery or have a “hostile abdomen” (scarring from earlier operations), and it allows faster recovery with less impact on bowel function.
- Performed the first day-case retroperitoneal robotic partial nephrectomy at the Royal Free Hospital Specialist Centre for Kidney Cancer.
- He was the first international recipient of the Advances in Genitourinary Robotic Reconstruction Scholarship, which took him to Northwestern University in the USA.
Enhanced recovery and day-case surgery
Mr Reekhaye has a strong focus on enhanced recovery pathways. He offers day-case or short-stay robotic surgery to appropriately selected patients.
Upper tract reconstruction
Mr Reekhaye also treats benign conditions of the kidney and ureter, including:
- Robotic pyeloplasty (correcting a blockage at the kidney outlet)
- Ureteric strictures, including advanced techniques such as buccal mucosal graft ureteroplasty, in partnership with a specialist reconstructive urology colleague
- Recruits patients into NIHR kidney cancer studies, including VISP and PaRTial
- Published widely in peer-reviewed journals
- First prize at the South Thames Regional Urology Meeting
- Advances in Genitourinary Robotic Reconstruction Scholarship
Qualifications and training
- Medical degree, Newcastle University
- Higher surgical training in London, ranked second nationally at ST3 selection
- MCh in Minimally Invasive Surgery (Urology), with distinction
- Post-CCT fellowship in renal cancer surgery, King’s College Hospital NHS Foundation Trust
- Advanced fellowship, Frimley Renal Cancer Centre, in high-volume robotic renal surgery, including the retroperitoneal approach
- Locum Consultant for 16 months, Royal Free Hospital Specialist Centre for Kidney Cancer
- Substantive Consultant, Frimley Renal Cancer Centre
Mr Reekhaye is committed to personalised, high-quality care, combining surgical expertise with clear communication and a patient-centred approach.
